Smoke alarms in Mackay owner-occupied homes must meet the upgraded requirements by 1 January 2027 where an earlier stage does not already apply. At Infuse Electrical, we can inspect your existing alarms and provide professional alarms installation and upgrades to help ensure your property meets Queensland requirements.

What Are the Queensland alarms Requirements?

To meet Queensland’s alarms requirements, required alarms must:

  • Be photoelectric
  • Comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014
  • Be interconnected, so when one alarm activates, all required alarms activate.
  • Be less than 10 years old
  • Operate correctly when tested
  • Be hardwired to mains power where required, or otherwise use an approved non-removable 10-year battery
  • Not contain an ionisation sensor

Where Do alarms Need to Be Installed?

Compliant alarms are required:

  • Inside every bedroom
  • In hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home
  • On every storey of the property
  • Where there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and the remainder of the storey
  • On a storey without bedrooms, in the most likely path of travel towards an exit

Correct positioning is also important. alarms must be installed in accordance with Queensland requirements, including appropriate clearances from lights, ceiling fans, air-conditioning vents and corners.

The 1 January 2027 Deadline

Don't Leave Your Alarm Upgrade Until the Last Minute

From 1 January 2027, all remaining domestic dwellings in Queensland must have compliant interconnected photoelectric alarms installed.

This includes existing:

Homes | Townhouses | Units | Manufactured Homes

Properties being sold or leased are already required to meet the upgraded alarms requirements.

With the deadline approaching, now is the time to check your property and arrange any necessary upgrades.

Hardwired alarms

If your property requires hardwired alarms, they must be connected to the electricity supply by a licensed electrician.

Where an existing hardwired alarms needs to be replaced, Queensland requirements generally require it to be replaced with a hardwired photoelectric alarm.
